W. Swimming. Steenvoorden Wins Second Medal at World University Games

Former University of Minnesota swimmer Ashley Steenvoorden won her second medal of the 2013 World University Games in Kazan, Russia Monday morning, earning bronze in the women's 800m freestyle final with a time of 8:29.79.

Just two days earlier, Steenvoorden claimed the silver medal in the women's 1500m freestyle final with a time of 16:07.89.

On the men's side, senior Derek Toomey advanced to the final of the men's 50m freestyle after finishing third with a time of 22.45 in Monday's semifinal. Toomey moved into the semifinal after placing second in his preliminary heat in 22.43.

The final of the men's 50m freestyle will take place Tuesday and will be aired live on ESPN3 beginning at 10:00 a.m. CT.

Fellow senior Kyler Van Swol competed in the men's 100m butterfly on Sunday, where he advanced to the event's semifinal after finishing first in his preliminary heat with a time of 52.37. He then placed fourth in his semifinal with a time of 52.80.

Van Swol will close out competition at the World University Games Tuesday in the men's 4x100m medley relay.
