CAIRO (AP) ? A former Egyptian jihadist returned home on Wednesday saying he wanted to clear a case of mistaken identity that confused him with a senior al-Qaida leader sought by the United States. Washington confirmed that Mohammed Ibrahim Makkawi is not the wanted Saif al-Adel.

The fact that Makkawi felt safe returning home after years in exile illustrated the more welcoming atmosphere for hard-line Islamists in post-Hosni Mubarak Egypt, where even Islamists with ideologies akin to al-Qaida's now sit in parliament.

Makkawi was arrested on his arrival at Cairo airport and taken for questioning, security and airport officials said.

His name appears on the FBI list of most wanted terrorists as an alias for the senior al-Qaida figure known as Saif al-Adel, a pseudonym that means "sword of justice." The wanted man is an Egyptian who has been indicted by the United States for an alleged role in the Aug. 7, 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Tanzania and Kenya that killed 224 people. He also was linked to the 2002 killing of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl.

Two U.S. officials also said the arrested man appears to have been mistaken for the al-Qaida operative. They spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence information that has not been publicly released.

The FBI said it was still sorting out details of the case.

"We are aware that an individual has been taken into custody and every effort is being made by the U.S. government to verify the identity of the person in custody," said William Carter, a spokesman at FBI headquarters. He declined to comment further.

Saif al-Adel remains an FBI fugitive, said FBI spokeswoman Kathy Wright.

An AP investigation last June revealed that several European intelligence and law enforcement agencies doubted U.S. assertions that Makkawi was an alias for Saif al-Adel, and believed he was in fact another man. AP also published photographs of two faces that bore little resemblance and spoke with people in several countries who knew both Makkawi and el-Adel, who insisted they were not the same man.

The FBI at the time refused to address the apparent differences between the two photographs and profiles.

Makkawi's return reflects the changing fortunes of Egyptian Islamists after last year's ouster of Mubarak, their scourge for the 29 years he was in power.

Mubarak's overthrow in a popular uprising empowered Islamist groups, which went on to sweep recent elections for parliament's upper and lower houses. In the meantime, hundreds of militants who once used violence to topple Mubarak's government and replace it with a purist Islamic state have been released from jail, where they languished for years under the provisions of emergency laws.

Some of these, including ultraconservative Salafis who follow a doctrine close to al-Qaida's except for the use of violence, are now lawmakers. During a recent session of the lower house, a Salafi lawmaker created a stir when he interrupted the proceedings to sing out the call for prayers. Others have altered the oath of office by adding a phrase that they would not follow any laws or respect a constitution that violated the teachings of Islam.

Noman Benotman, a Libyan who was once a member of a jihadist group linked to al-Qaida, said Makkawi was encouraged to come home to clear his name "as many former jihadists have been released since all of the political changes in Egypt."

Benotman, now an analyst at the London-based Quilliam Foundation, has said previously he had met both Makkawi and Saif al-Adel and that they were two different people.

Saif al-Adel is an al-Qaida veteran, believed to have been the head of its military committee. After the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan following the 9/11 attacks, he fled to Iran. He was reportedly held under house arrest there, though it is believed he continued to be active and in recent years he was reportedly allowed to make trips to Pakistan.

At Cairo airport, Makkawi told reporters he was not Saif al-Adel and that he had nothing to do with the terror group since 1989. He said he entered Egypt with travel documents issued by the Egyptian Embassy in Islamabad. He flew to Cairo from Pakistan via Dubai.

"What has been said about me is lies. I never took part in actions against people or installations," he said.

"I decided to come to Egypt to live in peace and because I am certain of my innocence," he said. "I have cut no deals with Egyptian authorities," said Makkawi, who is 57. Makkawi gave his birth date as Dec. 17, 1954. The FBI says Saif al-Adel was born in 1960 or 1963.

Dressed in a gray Arab robe and a jacket, Makkawi bore no resemblance to the man in the photograph of Saif al-Adel distributed by the FBI. Makkawi has receding silver hair and wears glasses.

Makkawi said that Saif al-Adel's real name is Mohammed Salah Zidan. Montasser el-Zayat, a lawyer who represented Makkawi in Egypt, also told the AP the same thing last year. Several former militants who know both men said the FBI incorrectly mixed them up.

A senior Egyptian security official involved in the case said Makkawi was wanted for questioning in Egypt in a case dating back to 1994 that involves the activities of the militant Jihad group, whose members fought the government of ousted president Mubarak in an insurgency in the early 1990s.

Saif al-Adel's FBI profile was posted in October 2001 when the FBI "Most Wanted Terrorist" list was created ? just a month after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. The name "Mohammed Salah Zidan" is not mentioned in the FBI profile.

"I challenge any security agency to prove that I am Said al-Adel, who is a different person, named Mohammed Salah Zidan," said Makkawi.

The Egyptian official involved in the case supported Makkawi's assertion of innocence. The official said Makkawi was a former army officer who left Egypt in the 1980s to join the fight against Russian forces in Afghanistan.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

According to Arizona Coalition Against Domestic Violence, "slightly more than half of female victims of intimate partner violence live in households with children under age twelve and thousands of American children witness intimate partner violence within their own families". The impact of domestic violence is huge. "On average, more than three women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends in this country everyday" (Arizona Coalition Against Domestic Violence). The Arizona Coalition Against Domestic Violence states that, "victim safety and batterer accountability must be of primary importance". Victims also need to be able to trust the criminal justice system to protect them from the batterer. The Arizona Coalition Against Domestic Violence gives a great deal of advice on how to help someone if you believe they are a victim of domestic abuse. Sperm cannot detect smells: End of 'Lily of the Valley phenomenon' in sperm research?

ScienceDaily (Feb. 28, 2012) ? According to a 2003 study by German and American scientists, a component of the Lily of the Valley scent known as Bourgeonal alters the calcium balance of human sperm and attracts the sperm. The "Lily of the Valley phenomenon" -- also the title of a book about smelling -- was born as a result of this discovery that sperm act as swimming olfactory cells which follow a "scent trail" laid by the egg. However, a detailed explanation for the Lily of the Valley phenomenon remained illusive as neither Bourgeonal nor other scents could be identified in the female sex organ. Scientists from the caesar research centre in Bonn, an Institute of the Max Planck Society, have now discovered that sperm do not function like olfactory cells -- a finding that casts doubt on the assumption that scents play a role in fertilisation.

Sperm have a long journey ahead in their quest for the egg cell or ovum, and just a few of the million sperm reach their destination. The ovum supports the sperm in their quest by transmitting "chemical signposts," known as attractants. Researchers first discovered this ingenious system in sea urchins and found out that attractants control the swimming movement of the sperm by altering their calcium balance. The attraction of the sperm to the egg is referred to as "chemotaxis." Unlike in sea urchins, which release sperm and eggs into the seawater, the conditions in the narrow human fallopian tube are very difficult to emulate in experiments.

According to another model, the female sex hormone progesterone -- which is formed by cumulus cells near the ovum -- attracts the sperm. CatSper (cation channels of sperm) ion channels are responsible for the effect of the progesterone. The CatSper channels, which are found only in sperm, play an indispensable role in reproduction: men who carry a gene defect for CatSper are infertile. In a 2011 study, which was seen as a sensational breakthrough, scientists from the caesar research centre succeeded in showing that progesterone opens the CatSper channels directly and calcium flows through the channels into the sperm cell.

In their current study, the Bonn researchers demonstrate, in cooperation with scientists from the Forschungszentrum J?lich, that the Lily of the Valley scent imitates the effect of progesterone on sperm: Bourgeonal opens the CatSper channels directly -- that is without deviation via olfactory receptors and complex biochemical signalling pathways as found in olfactory cells. However, the scents only work at concentrations over 1000 times higher than progesterone. Therefore, scents only work if overdosed. The "Lily of the Valley phenomenon" is a laboratory artefact: sperm do not have an olfactory signalling pathway.

These findings provide important new insights for the sperm researchers. Why are the CatSper channels so unselective, and even react to menthol if the concentration is high enough? This "promiscuous" characteristic is probably crucial for reproduction. Using different "chemical signposts," the sperm must repeatedly reassure themselves on their difficult journey to the ovum that they are still on the right track. With the help of the CatSper channels as versatile and highly perceptive sensors, sperm can "read" the chemical milieu in the fallopian tube and find the ovum in this way. The Bonn-based researchers are now concentrating on identifying other attractants in the fallopian tube in addition to progesterone. One thing is clear at this stage: it is very unlikely that these are scents.

The new insights are also significant in medical terms. If the scientists succeed in disrupting the effect of female factors on the CatSper channels, it could lead to the development of an innovative contraceptive: the pill for men. However, such a development is still a very long way off.

About 50 percent of adults suffer some degree of dental fear and about 5 percent have severe dental fear. Even so, most people with dental fear go to the dentist regularly.

Swedish researchers have found that important factors in managing stress during a dental visit include optimism on the part of the patient and an atmosphere of humor in a patient?s interaction with the dental staff.

In one study, the University of Gothenburg team asked people with dental fear to complete a questionnaire and identified five main methods used by the patients to fight dental fear:

• Using internal resources. For example, telling yourself you?re strong enough to endure it, despite your fear.
• Self-distraction. For example, counting or singing to yourself or playing mental games with yourself to keep your mind off the dental treatment.
• Distancing. For example, telling yourself that the pain sensation feels like something else, such as numbness.
• Prayer.
• Optimism. For example, thinking ahead to when the treatment is over.

?The study has shown that patients who adopt an optimistic mindset cope with dental treatment significantly better and they visit the dentist more regularly than patients who spend their time in prayer, despair or catastrophizing,? researcher Jenny Bernson said in a university news release.

In a second study, interviews with patients with dental fear revealed that humor was an important factor in dealing with dental visits.

?Psychological barriers can be broken down by humor, both as a result of the patient and the dentist coming together more as equals, and as a result of humor reducing stress, increasing well-being and creating a pleasant atmosphere,? Bernson said.

MIAMI (AP) ? Dwyane Wade had 30 points and 10 assists, Mario Chalmers and Chris Bosh each scored 20 points and the NBA-leading Miami Heat stretched their winning streak to seven games with a 120-108 win over the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday night.

LeBron James scored 18 points, Norris Cole had 12 and Udonis Haslem added 10 for Miami (26-7), which has won each of its games during this streak by at least 12 points. Wade shot 11 for 16, the 11th straight game he's shot at least 50 percent, matching his career best in that department. He also had a run of 11 such games in his rookie season.

Isaiah Thomas scored 20 of his 24 points in the third quarter for Sacramento, which dropped its sixth straight. Marcus Thornton scored 23, Tyreke Evans finished with 21 points and 10 assists, and Jason Thompson had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Kings.

Next up for Miami: The New York Knicks and Jeremy Lin come to town Thursday.

The Kings were without guard John Salmons, a late scratch with a sore right hip.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said he didn't expect Sacramento to come out and play like a team with one of the NBA's worst records, and he was right. Thompson had 10 points and six rebounds in the opening quarter and Evans' buzzer-beating 3-pointer from near midcourt gave Sacramento a 32-26 lead after 12 minutes.

Maybe the biggest surprise of the first half was that it took Miami ? a team that had led by 20 points at some time in each of its six previous outings, but never enjoyed better than an 18-point margin Tuesday ? nearly a full hour after tipoff to get the highlight reels cranking.

James blocked a drive by Thomas, the Heat controlled the rebound, and took off running. James got the ball to Wade, who leaped, stayed airborne long enough to draw contact from Cousins and then made an acrobatic layup while falling to the floor. The three-point play put Miami ahead 49-47 and the Heat kept the lead ? such as it was ? the rest of the half.

Another spectacular James-to-Wade connection helped.

Wade forced Donte Greene into a miss, and Francisco Garcia grabbed the rebound and tried to lay the ball in, all in the same motion. James blocked Garcia's shot ? the Kings wanted goaltending ? and moments later threw a 70-foot chest pass to Wade for an alley-oop layup at the other end, part of a late mini-flurry that sent Miami into halftime leading 57-53.

The Heat kept the lead for the entirety of the third quarter, despite Thomas' best efforts.

Thomas' 20 points came in a 10-minute span of that quarter, a 5-for-6 effort from 3-point range and 5-for-5 from the foul line, the last three there coming when he was fouled by Cole while trying about a 25-footer in the final seconds of the third and getting Sacramento to 93-88.

That's about when Miami decided enough was enough.

A 15-5 run, mostly from the Heat reserves, provided the long awaited breathing room. Cole had four points and an assist in the early stages, and after Mike Miller missed a 3-pointer, Haslem capped the flurry with a one-handed putback dunk that sent Wade running about 15 feet onto the court at the other end in celebration.

NOTES: Haslem (now with 4,549) passed Rony Seikaly (4,544) for second place on Miami's all-time rebounding list. At his current pace, Haslem would have a chance to catch Alonzo Mourning (4,807) by the end of the season. ... Washington State Considers Gold and Silver as Legal Tender

In an effort to protect the property of citizens from the harmful effects of inflation created by the Federal Reserve, lawmakers in Washington State introduced a bill over the weekend to declare gold and silver legal tender within the state. Sound-money advocates across the nation immediately praised the effort.?

Citing several provisions of the U.S. Constitution and various rulings by the U.S. Supreme Court, the legislation notes that only gold and silver are to be considered legal tender by the states. The bill also blasts the federal government for imposing an unconstitutional monetary system on the states and for unjustly confiscating citizens? wealth by allowing the Fed to create money.

The legislation seeks to offer the people of Washington an opportunity to use constitutional money instead of the ever-depreciating paper currency issued by the American central bank, lawmakers who sponsored the bill told The New American. However, no one would be forced to accept gold or silver as payment.

?We have leveraged our debt-based currency to the hilt and the die is cast,? said Republican Rep. Matt Shea (above left), a co-sponsor of the bill and a military veteran who supports honest money. ?The Federal Reserve is faced with the position of having to further inflate our currency or have the system start to disintegrate.?

Under the proposed law, HB 2731, precious-metal coins would be treated the same as Federal Reserve Notes for state taxation purposes. And the state treasurer would be required to post the value of silver and gold every day based on market prices, an improvement over a similar law passed in Utah last year which recognized precious metals as legal tender, lawmakers said.

?The legislature finds that to secure property rights sound money is essential,? the bill states. ?Gold and silver currency retains earned wealth in the hands of the people and has provided civil societies with a fair, honest, and reliable medium of exchange for over six thousand years.?

According to the text of the legislation and economists, competition in currency would provide, among other benefits, greater security to the people of Washington in protecting their property from inflation. It would also serve to defend liberty, lawmakers noted.

?Sound money is freedom,? Rep. Shea explained. ?The free-market is about competition, and allowing competing currencies is just another extension of that time-honored principle.?

The absence of competition from gold and silver currency, meanwhile, exposes Washington?s citizens and businesses to more than a few problems including the ?chronic depreciation? of the Fed?s fiat paper money and the accompanying loss of purchasing power. And measures must be taken to fix the problem, legislators and economists believe.

The privately-owned Fed?s money printing represents nothing less than incremental confiscation of private property without just compensation, explained Rep. Shea, echoing the language in the legislation and a whole host of economists who study monetary policy. ?This depreciation is particularly tragic for seniors and others on fixed incomes,? he noted.

Another co-sponsor of the legislation, Rep. Jason Overstreet, told The New American that sound money is actually the key to an honest system of government. ?Most people know intuitively that their purchasing power is diminishing, but don?t know why,? he said. ?With our fiat paper Federal Reserve note currency, every time the Federal Reserve prints another note, the value of existing notes is debased, ultimately driving prices higher and higher.?

Even former Fed boss Alan Greenspan understood the implications of fiat currency, Rep. Overstreet noted, citing an essay Greenspan wrote decades ago entitled ?Gold and Economic Freedom.? In the piece, the former central bank chief masterfully explained why giving authorities the power to create currency out of thin air represented a deadly threat to liberty and prosperity.?

Across America, as the Fed?s policies continue to wreak havoc on the economy, lawmakers are taking notice at every level. U.S. Congressmen such as Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), who chairs the House Subcommittee on Monetary Policy, have taken an increasingly bold stand on honest-money issues. And the states are taking action, too.

Utah, for example, approved a landmark law last year which recognized gold and silver as legal tender. The measure garnered praise from sound-money proponents around the world. Over a dozen other states are now working on sound-money initiatives as well.

?The best road back to a really well-functioning monetary system is through the states ? exercising their monetary power as articulated in Article I, Section 10 of the [U.S.] Constitution to make nothing but gold and silver coin a payment in tender of debts,? said Utah attorney and businessman Larry Hilton, who authored sound-money legislation for his state and has been a key player in the national effort to restore an honest monetary system through state-level initiatives.

Hilton told The New American in an interview last year that if just a small handful of states were to follow in Utah?s footsteps on the monetary issue, the U.S. dollar and the American people would benefit significantly. And today, according to the Sound Money Center ? a group which was involved in the recent legislation introduced in Washington ? Idaho, Colorado, Minnesota, Iowa, Ohio, South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, and many other states are already at various stages of creating sound-money laws.?

?So begins the 2012 season of awakening the people of this nation to the virtues of sound money,? the Center noted in a statement announcing the introduction of the sound-money bill in Washington?s legislature. ?We will track this legislation closely as it makes its way through the legislative process.?

Other organizations such as the national Tenth Amendment Center and the Washington Sound Money Committee are also involved in the process. And commentators online were thrilled to learn about the introduction of legislation aiming to address the issue in yet another state.

While bills calling for honest money have failed in some cases, lawmakers and activists are hopeful about the prospects in Washington State. But even if the legislation does not become law this session, there could still be several benefits to it ? especially in terms of sparking a broader debate.

?If this bill doesn?t pass but starts a sound money conversation and can be used to educate citizens on the Constitutional principles and necessity of sound money, it will have been a success,? said Rep. Overstreet. ?As that education continues, we will see the passage of bills like this around the country and a return to sound money.?

The road to restoring a constitutional monetary system in America might be long and tough. But the alternatives, according to experts, are not pretty ? a destruction of the currency, economic upheaval, and maybe worse. There is even a very real possibly that a global monetary regime with the power to print world money could be erected, at least if the system?s powerful proponents get their way.

?We have strayed so far from the constitutional basis of money, that it can be a difficult conversation,? noted Rep. Overstreet. ?However, with even a short primer on the subject, even young children begin to understand the intrinsic value of gold and silver versus the paper they receive as allowance.?

The Fed has come under increasing scrutiny in recent years following several waves of ?quantitative easing? ? also known as printing new money ? and its unprecedented, multi-trillion-dollar bailouts of foreign banks, big corporations, and other central banks. Its widespread manipulation of markets has also attracted fierce criticism and a bipartisan outcry to rein in the institution.??

Washington lawmakers are requesting a hearing for the bill in the state House of Representatives, but no date has been set yet. For now, the legislation has been referred to the Committee on Ways and Means. It currently has four co-sponsors.
