They're going to live long, prosper, and ... drive Audis? Original Mr. Spock actor Leonard Nimoy teams up with Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock in the rebooted "Star Trek" films, for a new car commercial that's already cruising into the hearts of Trekkies.
In the ad, Nimoy beats Quinto in a game of online chess, and then the younger actor proposes a challenge. They'll meet at the country club for lunch and golf, and whoever gets to the club last buys the meal. Quinto zooms off in his new sleek Audi S7, while Nimoy struggles to even fit his golf clubs into his Mercedes.
There are "Trek" references aplenty, including Nimoy making a tractor beam joke, lens flares paying homage to J.J. Abrams' frequent use of them in his 2009 "Star Trek" movie, Nimoy singing his 1968 song "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins," a re-enactment of Spock's martyrdom from "Wrath of Khan," and a masterful comeuppance thanks to the Vulcan nerve pinch.
Nimoy himself tweeted a link to the ad with the note, "Always enjoy my friend @zacharyquinto. But trying to beat me out of a free lunch is not logical. LLAP (Live Long and Prosper)."
And Quinto also took to Twitter, writing, "i thought my friend @TheRealNimoy would win our bet on the up and up... guess i was wrong."
"Now THIS is a commercial that? will get to outer space faster than the two Spocks," wrote one YouTube fan.
"Star Trek: Into Darkness," with Quinto once again playing Spock, hits theaters May 16.
