British police arrest 6 on terrorism suspicions

(AP) ? British police have arrested five men and one woman in London on suspicion of terrorism, the force said in a statement.

The suspects were arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism, the statement said. It was part of a pre-planned intelligence-led operation, it said.

Police said the arrests are not linked to the upcoming Olympic Games.

The suspects range in age from 18 to 30. Three were arrested in west London and three others at a residential address in east London.

Police said they used a stun gun during the arrest of a 24-year-old man. Officers from the firearms unit were involved, police said.

Local resident John Smallshaw told The Associated Press that he was woken just after 4 a.m. by "five loud bangs in quick succession" when the raid began.

He said he saw police raiding a house and later saw "one young man taken on foot to a waiting ambulance."

Another man was later taken into an unmarked police car, he said, adding that plainclothes officers were still at the premise.

Continuing searches are being carried out at eight separate addresses in east, west and north London and at one business in east London, police said.

The suspects have been taken to a southeast London police station.
