When the Golden Gate Bridge opened on May 28, 1937, the San Francisco Chronicle called it a $35 million dollar steel harp. Its 4,200-foot-long suspension span was the longest in the world, not surpassed until 1964.

Nowadays it's a beloved icon for tourists and locals alike, with an average of?110,000 vehicles passing over it?each day. We've rounded up some of the bridge's best moments in this slideshow.

Numerous events and tributes are marking the bridge's 75th anniversary. When the bridge was completed, Chief Engineer Joseph P. Strauss wrote two poems, one of which starts:

At last the mighty task is done;
Resplendent in the western sun
The Bridge looms mountain high;
Its titan piers grip ocean floor,
Its great steel arms link shore with shore,
Its towers pierce the sky.
