Stop and go: ?Traffic officer? protein directs crucial step in cell division

ScienceDaily (July 6, 2012) ? A traffic officer standing at a busy intersection directing the flow of vehicles may be a rare sight these days, but a similar scene appears to still frequently play out in our cells. A protein called Lem4 directs a crucial step of cell division by preventing the progress of one molecule while waving another through, scientists at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany, have found.

The study is published online July 6 in Cell.

For an embryo to grow or a tissue to regenerate, its cells must divide. When one of our cells divides to give rise to two, the membrane that surrounds the cell's nucleus -- the nuclear envelope -- has to be broken down and later rebuilt, once the chromosomes have been dragged apart. For this re-assembly to take place, a protein called BAF has to have chemical tags called phosphates removed. Changing a protein's phosphorylation state -- its possession or lack of phosphate tags -- can involve regulating the activity of proteins that add phosphate, proteins that remove phosphate, or both. The EMBL scientists discovered a new molecule, Lem4, which acts as a traffic officer, stopping one protein from adding phosphate tags to BAF and bringing in another protein to remove the existing tags.

"This happens in both human cells and in the worm C. elegans, so it seems to be a strategy which evolved long ago," says Iain Mattaj, director general of EMBL, who led the work.

Through a combination of genetics and biochemical studies, the scientists found that, even though the worm version of Lem4 is markedly different from the human version, both perform the same double task at the end of cell division. Mattaj and colleagues suspect that this tactic -- having a single molecule that prevents tags being added and simultaneously promotes their removal -- could be employed in the many cellular processes that involve phosphate tags, such as the growth and division of cells or transmitting signals into cells from the environment.

It would now be interesting to investigate just what prompts Lem4 to start its double-action at the right moment, they say.

Question about ages and placements? - Adoption.com Forums

Ok this is geared for the BTDT but anyone please feel free to ring in if you have knowledge or a thought on this topic.
Our age group that is ideal for our family (we are great with this age group) is Newborn to 4 yrs old.
We have the baby (got him at 2 days old, he went home at 8 1/2 m and then back at 11 m) besides him we are now full with:
1 yr old FS
9 yr old FS
14 yr old FD
and now as of yesterday
14 yr old FD.
So I was in CPS and see a brand new baby (think he was probably 6 to 8 wks old) and a foster child. We have told CW's our prefered age group.
So are we not getting the littles because we are willing to take the bigs?
Just because we prefer littles, I know that doesnt mean we will get them but dagnabit I feel kinda persnickety about it now. Dont get me wrong....we are in this to help kids and right now the kids that need us are here but you know what? That baby needed too and we could have been there for him.
Just mostly rambling and I'm thinking your probably wondering "now what the heck is she really wanting to know...lol"

Older kids (specially teens) are SO hard to place! We are a county with less than 10 homes so many have to be placed out of town/county. I just cant help but wonder now that so many CW's know we WILL take in older kids and teens....will we ever get babies again?
Baby FS's bio mom is PG. We want to be that childs resource should that child need help. I'm just wondering what you all might think.

America?s Patent Crisis

But in the thriving digital sector, patents don?t work at all, and more patents are likely to cause more litigation rather than more innovation. A product like the iPhone that was world-changing and awesome five years ago seems boring today, leaving people to wonder what?s next. In this space, where the capital costs of innovating are relatively low, invention is driven by competition not monopolies. Practical engineers working in high-tech understand that the patent war is bad for innovation, but disturbingly the big corporate players in the industry are reconciling to it?costing American consumers billions and stifling startups. The government hands out patents so freely that there?s no way to make anything without violating every other big player?s patents. That?s fine for established firms that have had time to assemble (or buy) vast patent arsenals. But it?s a disaster for new entrants, who know that any successful new product they make will be taxed by a storm of litigation once it becomes popular. The real risk of ?foregone innovation? is that resources will be shunted away from making great products into hiring lawyers and away from investing in promising new firms into investing in old ones with legacy patent arsenals.

The Engadget Podcast is live tonight at 4PM ET!

In the words of Frank Miller's 300, "This is where we fight. This is where they die!" Not that those words are particularly relevant to this episode of the Engadget Podcast, but this is our 300th edition and we're feeling pretty Spartan. Maybe we'll amend it to, "this is where we podcast, this is where you chat." It's a work in progress, what can we say? Hopefully we'll have things a bit more nailed down when we go live at 4PM tonight. Only one way to find out!

British police arrest 6 on terrorism suspicions

(AP) ? British police have arrested five men and one woman in London on suspicion of terrorism, the force said in a statement.

The suspects were arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism, the statement said. It was part of a pre-planned intelligence-led operation, it said.

Police said the arrests are not linked to the upcoming Olympic Games.

The suspects range in age from 18 to 30. Three were arrested in west London and three others at a residential address in east London.

Police said they used a stun gun during the arrest of a 24-year-old man. Officers from the firearms unit were involved, police said.

Local resident John Smallshaw told The Associated Press that he was woken just after 4 a.m. by "five loud bangs in quick succession" when the raid began.

He said he saw police raiding a house and later saw "one young man taken on foot to a waiting ambulance."

Another man was later taken into an unmarked police car, he said, adding that plainclothes officers were still at the premise.

Continuing searches are being carried out at eight separate addresses in east, west and north London and at one business in east London, police said.

The suspects have been taken to a southeast London police station.

Former President Bush Joins Fight Against Cervical Cancer

WASHINGTON - Former President George W. Bush is in Africa this week to promote cervical cancer detection and treatment programs for women, many of whom are living with HIV.? While Bush?s tenure in office was marked by unpopular wars and what critics say were failed economic policies, since leaving office he has been quietly building upon his success as president in fighting AIDS in Africa.

In Kabwe, Zambia?s second largest city, former President George W. Bush and his wife Laura opened of a new health clinic that specializes in the early detection and treatment of cervical cancer in women.
?
?We care because we believe that to whom much is given, much is required,? said Bush. ?And those of us who live in America, live in the most blessed nation ever and therefore when we see suffering, we ought to act.?
?
Through his George W. Bush Center and other partner organizations, the former president has raised more than $85 million for cervical cancer programs.
?
He says his goal is to build upon one of the great bipartisan achievements of his presidency.
?
His 2003 AIDS initiative that initially funded $15 billion-worth of anti-retroviral drugs and treatment to extend the lives of millions of Africans with HIV and AIDS.
?
Zambia now has the second highest number of cervical cancer cases in the world, in part because many of the women infected with the disease are also living with HIV and have weakened immune systems.
?
?But the saddest thing of all is to know a lady?s life has been saved from AIDS but died from cervical cancer,? said Bush. ?And so starting in Zambia, the Bush Center, along with our partners, are going to put on a cervical cancer crusade to save lives.?
?
Jane Chanda, who is HIV positive, is one of the first women at the center to undergo the screening.? The health worker applies vinegar to the cervix area - to turn any cancerous nodes white - and then uses a digital camera to locate any potential problems.? The screening shows Jane to be cancer-free and she says she is grateful to former President Bush.
?
?He?s a very nice person,? said Chanda. ?I thank him and I am wishing you [him] a happy life, a good life.?
?
At home Bush?s presidency remains a controversial subject, dominated by the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001, prolonged wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and a deep global recession.
?
But in Zambia and much of Africa, he is remembered for saving lives.? A mother in Kabwe who just gave birth named her baby George in honor of his visit.
?
J. Stephen Morrison, director of the Health Policy Center at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, says. Bush deserves the credit.? He says in 2003,? Bush saw AIDS in Africa as a humanitarian disaster - that if left unchecked could destabilize the entire continent.
?
?When the president came forward and said, ?HIV/AIDS - we can save lives,? said Morrison. ?We can enhance lives. We can stabilize societies.?? It was with a very powerful ethical and moral rationale as much as it was about a security rationale.?
?
In his post-presidency Mr. Bush says he will continue to advocate for global health issues. For him, he says, it is a labor of love.
