Brooks agrees to contract extension with Thunder

(AP) ? Scott Brooks has signed a multiyear extension to return as coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

General manager Sam Presti announced Monday that Brooks agreed to a new contract, less than two weeks after the Thunder lost in five games to the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals.

The team did not disclose terms of the contract. Other media outlets have reported the deal is for four years at more than $4 million per year.

Brooks' previous deal was allowed to expire Saturday before the sides could come to an agreement on the terms. Brooks took over the Thunder early in the 2008-09 season and has led the team to the playoffs each of the past three seasons.

A news conference with Brooks is scheduled for Tuesday.

The Life Engineers: Prometheus Asks, Is a Culture as Stupid as Ours Ready to Create New Life?

Pinning down exactly what Ridley Scott?s larger-than-life Prometheus means may be impossible. But it?s safe to say that the movie ? the 3-D quasi-prequel to Scott?s seminal technoscience-horror fable, Alien ? is self-consciously a myth for our scientific era.

Prometheus opens over the shoulder of an alabaster figure on the edge of a prehistoric waterfall. This alien, called an Engineer, drinks a poison and falls into the waters. Our camera-eye follows, diving into his cells, which are darkening and cracking apart. Then we dive further ? into his very DNA, which is rapidly rotting and unwinding, but not disappearing. We are left unsure where his broken-down DNA is headed. Cue title sequence.

Why does Scott open with an act of alien genesis triggered by crumbling, black DNA? Regardless of what else the filmmakers want the opening scene to convey, this is a horror movie. Its opening suggests that something about DNA and DNA manipulation is a source of dread ? even as society today embraces biotechnology.

The biggest questions Prometheus asks may be, if DNA is a type of code or a language, who wrote the code of human life, and what did they intend for us? Our discomfort with the fact that manipulating DNA is a technique like any other ? something you can learn and exploit for useful, perhaps lucrative ends ? is driven by concerns over the motivations of those doing the manipulating.

If we were coded by authors with a motivation ? the Engineers in Prometheus ? can we be sure that we?re acting on our own volition? Our discomfort with being ?programmed? is logical, because free will presents us with a reason to behave more responsibly (you can?t blame anyone else) and a gift of constant discovery.

The Engineers are not new to our trove of archetypes. In a way, they?re unknowable like God, but in another way they?re just a larger, paler version of ourselves. Scott makes this clear when his archeologists discover that we share genomes. Humans are the Engineers? golems, Pinocchios, and Frankenstein?s creatures. The horror that comes with this discovery is that our makers are just about as ungodlike as we are.

The movie isn?t really about the Engineers, however. The Engineers are us. Do we want life to be given purpose by people as fallible, silly, vain, and stupid as we are? Of course, we?ve been bioengineering already. Since the advent of agriculture and animal husbandry, we?ve shaped the genetic direction that species take. Think: wolves into Pomeranians. But breeding has always been a slow, sloppy form of programming.

So here we are at the gates to the age of biotechnology, where scientists bioengineer yeast and bacterial cells to produce materials for us like medicines and plastics, where they use genetically engineered viruses to manipulate the brain cells of mice as if neurons were the strings of a marionette. The moment when bioengineering becomes indistinguishable from computing is coming. Companies like Autodesk are already developing bioCAD software, and undergraduate students are doing bioengineering for their summer projects. With the Engineers ? humanity?s Gepetto ? Prometheus offers a slant on where this all might lead.

Sure, just as the Engineers, we?ll weave our own messy psychology into the life we make. But will we also leave something out? That is, free will ? the ability to desire, act, and react in new ways. When behaviors are programmed, free will gets lost. Perhaps that?s okay when we think about a lowly E. coli churning out fuel. But we feel disgust the more we can identify with the organism we?re programming. Imagine owning a bioengineered dog that never veered from its hardwired instructions; it would be more of an appliance than a pet. And a completely programmed human being? This is the stuff of horror.

Science fiction?s forecasts have many times hit dead-on (submarines, space travel, computer hacking). Stories that focus on biotech often come back to a central theme, perhaps the predominant question of our age: When DNA becomes just another toolset, what will separate us from any other object that?s made? And what?s transcendent about life if we can design it ourselves?

In the biotech era, the creation of new life may be the ultimate source of bio-angst-the feeling that there?ll never be a satisfactory reason for our existence. If life is just stuff to be worked into new forms, then nothing separates life from ore, plastic, or anything else we can manipulate with tools.

Scott?s Prometheus shows that ? as a culture forced to make increasingly difficult decisions regarding science ? we haven?t escaped the debate central to Mary Shelley?s Frankenstein or what she called The Modern Prometheus (no coincidence). Shelley?s creature ? abandoned by his genius creator ? asks, why did you make me? Scott?s movie just reverses the equation. In Prometheus, we are the creature, abandoned, and we want the Big Answer.

Prometheus is not simply the most recent, biggest-budget story of humanity?s bio-angst ? it?s also the story that comes at a time when humanity is finally able to test the reasons for its angst empirically. Here at the opening of the biotech era, we?re both excited and afraid of what our future holds.

Google I/O 2012 - more than swag and Jelly Beans

Google I/O 2012

You might have heard that we just got back from Google I/O (it was sort of a big deal for Android fans). We're tired, we're cranky, and we're sitting with our sore feet propped up just waiting for next year so we can do it all over again. It's work, but it's the best part of the best job a nerd could ever want. You also probably heard about the "big news" from Google I/O, namely Nexus tablets and Jelly Bean. But that's not what I/O was really all about.

Google stretched I/O into three days this year, and that gave us 33-percent more of what's really important about the entire event -- code-jams and sessions for developers by developers. Google I/O is all about the code. I had that epiphany sitting in an overcrowded room waiting for one of the great talks from the Android developers to start, looking at the excited faces of people who felt exactly the same way I did. I was there on a press pass, but at heart I'm just a code-monkey (Thanks for this Dr. Lee, I owe it all to you). I've moved away from it as of late, but every time I see brackets or a .h file I can't help but remember what I really am. The under-appreciated folks who gave the talks and answered all our questions left me star-struck, and satisfied in a way that wine or women never will.

The keynotes were impressive, there's no doubt. Skydiving and magic glasses are impossible to ignore. The toys kick ass, and I'll use them until I wear them out, knowing all the while that getting them from Google makes me lucky as hell. But for me, they were just the appetizer for the main course, which was held in each of the smaller rooms where geek-speak ruled the day. Some were more interesting for me than others, some I attended simply to stay abreast of Android's direction, but every one of them was important to the future of technology. Google I/O is good for Google and all their products, but you still have to appreciate the lengths they go to so that we can learn. It really is Mecca for a Google fan.

There's one other thing that a trip to Google I/O (and probably Apple's WWDC or any similar event) will remind you of. In a room full of Android phones, MacBooks, iPhones, and Blackberries (sorry Windows Phone) you realize that squabbles about which platform is better don't amount to a hill of beans and all the noise about lawsuits and rivalry is just that -- noise. We were all there to learn, and we all learned how to make technology better. Better for Android, better for iOS, better for the web, and most importantly, better for you and me. News is news, and we still have to make a bit of noise ourselves, but I want to take this one chance to mention that it doesn't matter what brand of consumer electronics you use, only that you like it.

I've got a head full of Google and Android to try to put into words the next couple of days, but I wanted to start with what's important. I cant wait for next year!

10. New jobs for Brooke Dockyard

KUCHING: State-owned Brooke Dockyard & Engineering Works Corp has clinched two contracts worth RM102mil for the fabrication of an offshore jacket and construction of a 45m-long landing craft.

Sarawak Infrastructure Development and Communications Minister Datuk Sri Michael Manyin said the RM90mil offshore jacket contract was awarded by Murphy Oil while the RM12mil landing craft contract came from Marine Department.

He said the offshore jacket contract was part of a package worth RM500mil that included the fabrication of three offshore platforms.

?Hopefully, Brooke Dockyard will secure the entire RM500mil contract to be delivered over two years,? he said after opening Brooke Dockyard's new Sejingkat yard office building near here yesterday.

Manyin is the minister in charge of Brooke Dockyard, which just turned 100 years old.

Brooke Dockyard board member and technical advisor Zuraimi Sabki said it had just completed a RM160mil offshore module for Murphy, which is ready to be delivered and installed in Merapuh, offshore Bintulu.

Founded by the third White Rajah Sir Charles Vyner Brooke in 1912 to repair his fleet of boats, Zuraimi said Brooke Dockyard was one of the seven fabricators for the oil and gas (O&G) industry licensed by Petrolium Nasional Bhd.

Zuraimi said Brooke Dockyard had completed 15 offshore modules, 10 substructures and four offshore living quarters. Its clients included Petronas Carigali, Shell, Talisman and Exxon Mobil Exploration and Production Ltd, in addition to Murphy Oil.

It has also built navigational boats, multi-mission vessels, ferries for marine engineering works and steel-arch bridges.

Asked if Brooke Dockyard is to be privatised to enable it to expand and undertake bigger jobs, Manyin said: ?We have not gone to that level.?

Over the years, there have been media reports singling out Brooke Dockyard as a potential takeover target as several parties have shown their interests.

Manyin said the Sarawak government had not received any formal proposal on Brooke Dockyard's privatisation.

Brooke Dockyard chairman Datuk Abang Abdul Karim Tun Openg said the marine engineering entity was looking at various options, including renting the fabrication yard of other companies, to expand its capacity.

?We are exploring our own yard to optimise its utilisation,? he added.

Last November, Brooke Dockyard signed a memorandum of understanding with KKB Engineering Bhd for possible joint collaboration to undertake jacket and other structural steel fabrication activities for offshore O&G industry and marine sector.

The two parties may enter into joint venture or other forms of collaboration on businesses to be identified. It is understood that the framework for the proposed strategic alliance had been drawn up.

KKB, whose core business is steel fabrication and manufacturing of steel pipes, had said that the tie-up might include the company leasing its waterfront land in Muara Tebas to Brooke Dockyard for its fabrication work for the O&G industry, with the exclusive rights given to KKB to carry out such works.

Abang Karim said Brooke Dockyard had been building up its capabilities as a reliable fabricator of offshore modules comprising drilling platforms, gas compression/production modules, water injection platforms and living quarters.

?Brooke Dockyard also has the capabilities to undertake turnkey projects for offshore development, fast-track projects, offshore host tie-in and hook-up and commissioning works, subsea fabrication, skid packages and onshore petro-chemical plants.

?It maintains its traditional business as a shipbuilder for high-speed and modern boats, ship-repair total lifecycle service provider and mid-span bridge fabricator,? he added.

Abang Karim said Brooke Dockyard had been structured to face the changing industry.

He said that with its niche capabilities in shallow water sized modules as living quarters and with an integrated in-house engineering team, it aimed to become a project developer for offshore marginal oil fields in Malaysia.
